The smallest neutrino mass
We consider models where one Majorana neutrino is massless at tree level (like the see saw with two right-handed neutrinos), and compute the contribution to its mass m generated by two-loop quantum corrections. The result is m ∼ 10 eV in the SM and m ∼ 10 eV · (tan β/10) in the MSSM, compatible with the restricted range suggested by Affleck-Dine baryogenesis.
متن کاملTheory of the Neutrino Mass
Theoretical aspects of neutrino physics are reviewed, with emphasis on possible explanations of the smallness of neutrino masses and of the peculiar mixing pattern observed in the lepton sector. Some theoretically motivated frameworks, such as those based on spontaneously broken discrete flavour symmetries, are discussed, stressing the importance of low-energy observables, like anomalous magnet...
متن کاملThe Neutrino Mass Direct Measurements
One of the most important tasks in neutrino physics is to determine the neutrino mass scale to distinguish between hierarchical and degenerate neutrino mass models and to clarify the role of neutrinos as dark matter particles in the universe. The current tritium β decay experiments at Mainz and Troitsk are reaching their sensitivity limit. The different options for a next generation direct neut...
متن کاملThe Simplest Neutrino Mass Matrix
We motivate the simplest ansatz for the neutrino mass matrix consistent with the data from neutrino oscillation experiments, and admitting CP violation. It has only two free parameters: an arbitrary mass-scale and a small dimensionless ratio. This mass matrix exhibits two symmetries, Democracy and Mutativity, which respectively ensure trimaximal mixing of the |ν2〉 mass eigenstate, and mixing pa...
متن کاملThe Status of Neutrino Mass
New experimental results, if correct, require at least one light sterile neutrino, in addition to the three active ones, to accommodate the mass differences required to explain the solar νe deficit, the anomalous ν/e ratio produced by atmospheric neutrinos, and either the candidate events for νμ → νe (or ν̄μ → ν̄e) from the LSND experiment, or the possible need for a hot component of dark matter....
